Parow gets connected to the City

The City of Cape Town has installed its 143rd FreeCall line at the Parow Park Housing complex in Parow.

Xanthea Limberg, mayoral committee member for corporate services and compliance, said the lines made it easier for residents to call the City for help at no cost to them.

“I am sure many will agree that cellphones have a knack of running out of airtime or having a flat battery when we need them most. In addition, the high cost of cellphone calls often makes it difficult for residents to reach out to the City for services. This free service can be seen as a lifeline that makes the City more accessible to communities,” said Ms Limberg.

Residents can use the FreeCall service to query accounts and municipal services and report illegall dumping, blocked sewers, leaks, potholes, faulty street lights and more.

The phone automatically connects to the City’s call centre when the receiver is lifted. A call centre agent answers in a language of the caller’s choice, logs a service request and gives the caller a reference number.

There are FreeCall lines in municipal buildings, housing offices, cash offices, libraries, clinics and in community facilities throughout the city.

* The City’s call centre received a total of 55 457 calls from FreeCall lines between November and January. The project was launched in July 2009 when lines were installed in City facilities in Strand, Lwandle and Khayelitsha.
