The new Origin Family-centred Maternity Hospital in Panorama, has celebrated the birth its first babies. This midwife-led hospital is headed by midwife Sydney Grové as general manager, himself with more than 23 000 deliveries under his belt.
The first baby born at Origin was Abigail Johnson, weighing 3.010 kg, delivered with the support of clinical midwife specialist Henny de Beer and midwife Heike Millar, with doula Vania Truter and back-up obstetrician Jackie Searle in attendance.
Abigail’s mother, Orla, had a Caesarean before, and Origin is set to support many women who want a vaginal birth after Caesarean.
The hospital also has labour, delivery, postpartum and recovery (LDPR) suites where the father can stay over.
Second to arrive was little William Halbert, whose parents Margaret and Daniel are from New York, and currently living in Stellenbosch.
He weighed in at 4.090kg and the birth was attended by Henny de Beer.
The third Origin baby was born to Ryno and Emma-Lee Venter of Brackenfell. Little Joanne weighed 3.020 kg and was delivered by midwives Rehana Desai Roach and Marijke van der Merwe.
Big sister Cailyn was also part of this special moment, and midwife Heike Millar looked after mother and baby postnatally.
