Nursing staff at Karl Bremer Hospital have been thanked for their hard work.
The hospital held a function to celebrate International Nurses Day on May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.
Dr De Vries Basson described the nurses as the eyes and ears of the hospital. “You know the patients better than we do and are the first point of contact,” he said.
Hospital CEO Dr Linda Naude thanked her staff for the long hours they put in.
Nurse Hilmary Felix, graduated from the Western Cape College of Nursing in 2015 and has spent her first year working as a nurse at Karl Bremer. She said she wanted to help people and that was why she had chosen the profession.
The City also presented long-service awards to nurses from various metro clinics, including Durbanville, on Thursday May 11.
JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security and social services, said nurses were the “backbone” of the health services and successes in lowering the child mortality rate and in fighting HIV and TB “would not be possible without the hard work and dedication – often in challenging circumstances – of our nursing staff”.
