Kraaifontein police registered an inquest for investigation after two newborn babies were found in the drainage system on Sunday.
Provincial police spokesman, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, said the police diving unit was called to retrieve the bodies.
“Upon their arrival at a drain in Wallacedene informal settlement, they found the bodies of two minors floating in the water. Both victims were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel,” said Warrant Officer Swaartbooi.
Mkholisi Mpukumpa, a community leader and chairperson of the Wallacedene Development Forum, said: “We are disturbed that residents found premature babies in the drain.
“We make a call to the community to go to the social workers when they are not ready to raise their baby. There are many people who are willing to take babies, or go to the organisation based in Bloekombos where you drop a baby in the container and that baby will be taken in a few minutes.”
