Music for Madiba

Smile 90.4FM, will be paying tribute Nelson Mandela, in his centenary year, by giving buskers the opportunity to make music – and make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children.

On Mandela Day, Wednesday July 18, 67 buskers will play 67 minutes of music in honour of Tata Madiba at 67 locations around Cape Town.

Local buskers will be taking to the streets at noon and can be identified by a Smile 90.4FM poster and bucket for collecting loose change and will include recipients of last year’s donation, Bridgeville Primary in Bridgetown.

Thanks to last year’s event, Bridgeville Primary now has a fully functioning music department.

“A year ago, we were equipped with a drum set and loads of enthusiasm. That was it. Anything more seemed like a pipe dream due to the prevailing economic situation. We are truly grateful for the kick-start. Now it’s all about maintaining momentum” said head of music at Bridgeville Primary, Rashid Benefeldt.

Nelson Mandela once said “Music is a great blessing. It has the power to elevate and liberate us. It sets people free to dream. It can unite us to sing with one voice. Such is the value of music.”

All money collected during the 67 minutes of busking will be donated towards music development for underprivileged children.
