An off-duty policeman shot and killed one of three men who tried to mug him in Goodwood, last week, say police.

According to Goodwood police station commander Colonel Sibusiso Mntambo, the officer was walking from a shop, on Wednesday February 28, at 9.20pm, when three men in a grey Toyota bakkie accosted him on the corner of Dingle and Surrey roads.

“One suspect jumped out of the bakkie and stabbed the officer twice in the back.

“The officer drew his duty pistol and shot the suspect twice,” he said.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said paramedics had found a man lying in the middle of the road with a gunshot wound to his head.

They had tried to stabilise the critically injured patient.

Colonel Mntambo said the 20-year-old was declared dead on arrival at Tygerberg Hospital.

Police arrested two other suspects, aged 18 and 19.

The officer lives is stationed at Khayelitsha police station.

“The officer is in his late 30s and allegedly sustained minor stab wounds,” said Goodwood police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Hennie Rademeyer.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was investigating a case of murder as was “normal procedure”, he said.

The other two suspects appeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court on a charge of attempted robbery on Monday March 5.
