A Metro police officer was badly burnt in a petrol-bomb attack on his car during weekend rioting in Kraaifontein.
JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security, said there had more than 4000 attacks on City staff during land-invasion protests across Cape Town in the past week.
Provincial police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said three men and a woman from Wallacedene were due to appear at the Blue Downs Magistrate’s court this week on public violence charges
According to Mr Smith, more than 600 protesters approached Metro police officers and law enforcement officers on the corner of Maroela Road and the Old Paarl Road in Bloekombos on Saturday at 2pm. Protesters threw petrol bombs and one hit a Metro police officer, burning his face and arms.
“Staff managed to extinguish the flames and rushed the officer to a nearby hospital,” he said.
The City is now offering a reward for any information that can help lead to the arrest and prosecution of the person responsible.
