Three masked gunmen who robbed the Checkers FX store in Durbanville, holding staff at gunpoint before fleeing with R350 000, are still at large, say police.

The robbers entered the store at the Midwell Centre, in Wellington Road, through the staffroom entrance just before the store opened on Monday July 4, at 7am.

“They threatened the security guards with their firearms, forcing them to take them to the cash room. The men threatened everyone and demanded cash from the safe,” said Durbanville police spokesman Captain Marchell Rhode.

The robbers took bags of All Pay money worth R80 000 along with R270 000 from the store’s safe.

No shots were fired and there were no reports of injuries.

“At this stage, no suspects have been arrested, and a business robbery will be investigated by police,” Captain Rhode said.

Checkers staff approached by the Northern News declined to comment.

Durbanville Community Police Forum spokesman Louie Storm encouraged business owners and residents in the CBD to regularly evaluate their security measures and consider joining a neighbourhood watch. Email him at cpf.durbanville@gmail.com for more information.
