Police arrested three Durban men and seized an assault rife on a bus in Kraaifontein.
Police say the men were found in a possession of an R5 assault rifle and a 9mm Norinco pistol with the serial number filed off. Officers also confiscated several rounds of ammunition for each of the weapons.
Kraaifontein police spokesman Captain Hein Hendricks said crime intelligence tipped them off at 6pm on Thursday March 18 about the suspects, aged 25, 32 and 34, who were travelling on the bus from Durban to Cape Town.
The police acted immediately on the information and caught up with the bus at a petrol station on the N1.
“When the identified passenger bus arrived, they pulled it over and thoroughly searched it. They discovered an unlicensed R5 with 21 rounds of ammunition as well as a 9mm Norinco pistol, containing seven rounds, and its serial number filed off and hidden inside a black bag. The three suspects who were travelling together were linked to the bag,” Captain Hendricks says.
