The City has raised concerns about street lights being vandalised in Kraaifontein.
This comes after technicians repaired 47 street light faults along the Botfontein Road alone, from Wednesday October 23 to Tuesday November 5, according to mayoral committee member for energy Xanthea Limberg.
“Kraaifontein is one of the City’s hot spot areas, and it is unfortunate that we are seeing many repeat street light vandalism cases along the busy Botfontein Road and in the area. As soon as we repair infrastructure, it is often vandalised again,” she said.
Other areas affected by street light vandalism included Bernadino Heights, Scottsdene and Wallacedene, she said.
“The impact of street light vandalism and theft is huge across the city and this not only compromises public safety, but also places a significant financial burden on the municipality. These acts of destruction divert resources from essential services and hinder the City’s efforts to improve the lives of residents in our communities,” Ms Limberg said.
From Wednesday October 23 to Tuesday November 5, technicians attended to more than 3 000 street lights across the City.
Mitchell’s Plain, Gugulethu, Wynberg and Muizenberg were also hot spots for street light vandalism, said the City.
