A 40-year old man was arrested in Kraaifontein on Thursday last week for the alleged possession of child pornography.
The suspect, who was arrested in Belmont Park, was found with more than 149 000 child-porn pictures and 5000 videos, say police.
The man was also found in possession of two unlicensed firearms, various calibres of ammunition and nine snakes, of which three were kept without a permit, said national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
The man is facing charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition; possession, distribution and accessing of child pornography; and captivity of wild animals.
He appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Monday, and his case was postponed to Tuesday January 30 for a bail application.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the state would oppose bail.
Brigadier Mathe said police had arrested seven alleged online child sex predators nationally since November last year.
A 32-year-old Mitchell’s Plain was also arrested on Friday last week for allegedly chatting with under-age girls on chat groups where nude pictures were exchanged, according to Brigadier Mathe.
