Kraaifontein cancer survivor and activist Michael Wyne is appealing for sponsorship to be able to put a smile on the faces of fellow survivors.
Mr Wyne, who has beaten cancer twice, pledged to do a “walk and greet” visit to a five-year-old girl in Elsies River to give hope and, at the same time, raise awareness about the illness.
He had planned to meet the girl last year but was unable to do so due to financial constraints. Part of his initiative is to leave the survivor with a gift.
“I ran out of money for surprising gifts but I will definitely do it this year. They are waiting for me,” he said, referring to the girl’s parents.
Since 2019 he has been visiting cancer survivors and this will be his 29th campaign, the last having taken place when he visited Vredendal on Friday December 23.
“I am in remission and went for a walk, the 28th time to Vredendal, to meet and greet a sick daughter. My vision for the new year is going on with my walk and rides while I am fit to do so,” he said. “My vision is to give hope for the hopeless.”
Remission means that the signs and symptoms of cancer are reduced but he still needs to visit the doctor every five months.
Mr Wyne was first diagnosed in 2018 and has survived both colon and prostate cancer, he said.
