Brackenfell police are searching for the five men who held a security guard hostage and robbed a jewellery store at Cape Gate Mall on Sunday, at 6am.
The security guard was standing outside the mall when four men approached him while another man sat waiting in a grey Toyota Quest in the parking area.
Captain Erica Crous, spokeswoman for Brackenfell police, said one of the suspects threatened the guard with a gun and told him to accompany them to Cape Jewel, a jewellery store in the mall.
“It is believed that another suspect had a gun with him,” she said.
No shots went off and nobody was injured.
Security footage shows one robber stayed with the guard while the others broke a glass door to get inside the store.
“The suspects left the centre with an undisclosed amount of jewellery,” Captain Crous said.
Cape Gate Mall marketing coordinator Thameenah Petre said the security guard had turned down an offer of counselling and had returned to his duties.
