Illegal drag racers, including the drivers of a Mercedes AMG and an Audi, were caught by the City of Cape Town’s Ghost Squad last week.
The City said it made 11 arrests during an operation to tackle illegal street racing in the northern suburbs on Wednesday January 25, eight for reckless and negligent driving and three for drunk driving.
“In Panorama, officers caught the drivers of a Mercedes AMG and an Audi racing on Plattekloof Road. After a high-speed chase, the vehicles were eventually forced to a stop in Jip de Jager Road in Bellville,” said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security, and social services.
He said the Ghost Squad had registered 26 803 offences during illegal street racing operations since January last year, including 883 arrests for reckless and negligent driving and drunk driving.
