The Maroela Housing Project, in Kraaifontein, will see nearly 2 000 Wallacedene and Bloekombos residents benefit from the development.
Situated next to the N1 highway, the project is still in its early stages of planning.
“As such, details relating to the number of houses, kinds of housing opportunities and the costs involved, are still to be determined as statutory processes, including the authorisations of land use and environmental matters, need to be followed,” Benedicta van Minnen, the Mayco member for human settlements, told Northern News.
The outcome of these processes will guide the detailed planning of the project, she added. However, the City hopes that about 1 900 housing opportunities would be created, but this is subject to change based on the outcome of the various processes, including land and environmental matters.
“In the meantime, the City will continue to make every effort to ensure that housing opportunities are made available and that these opportunities are allocated to beneficiaries in a fair and systematic manner, in accordance with the City’s housing allocation policy and national qualifying criteria.”
For this specific project, beneficiaries will include residents from the Bloekombos and Wallacedene areas who are registered on the housing database and qualify in accordance with the City’s housing allocation policy and the national qualifying criteria.
San-Marie van Jaarsveld, an official from the human settlements directorate, said at the recent Sub-council 2 meeting, only residents aged 40 and above would benefit from the development.
DA proportional representative councillor Xoliswa Pakela-Mapasa, elected to steer the project, told the Northern News that the councillors are set to meet to iron out the project’s details.
She said sub-council will share more information after the first meeting is held.
