Hard work pays off for cop

A Bellville police officers hard work and dedication paid off when a 42-year-old man from Wallacedene was sentenced for the murder of an 86-year-old Groenvallei resident in 2015. The man was sentenced to 20 years for murder, 10 years for house robbery and five years for housebreaking and theft. The sentences will run concurrently. Bellville police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Henrietta van Niekerk said Daphne Higgins was murdered at her home on May 15 2015. There were contractors working on her roof at her house at that time. One of the workers came back after work and gained entry through the roof they were working on. He murdered Ms Higgins and took several items from her home as well as her motor vehicle, she said. The vehicle was later recovered in Wallacedene and the man apprehended. It took two years of dedication and hard work but it paid off for Sergeant Clinton Lategan, pictured, when the man was sentenced on Thursday June 29.
