The City of Cape Town, in partnership with BirdLife South Africa and the Cape Bird Club, will hold a festival and family fun walk at the False Bay Nature Reserve Park (FBNR) on Saturday April 16.
The reserve is regarded as the most significant natural asset on the Cape Flats, and in 2015 it was declared a Ramsar Site, which is a wetland of international importance.
The FBNR Birdathon Fun Walk and Festival aims to bring together people of all ages to introduce them to the area and its natural resources by letting them experience it in a fun way.
Residents can participate in a 4km, 5km or 6km walk through the Strandfontein Birding Area section of the reserve and do a fun environmental quiz relating to the area.
There will be a lucky draw at the end of the walk.The first 950 participants who register early and complete the routes will receive a free lunch courtesy of a seafood restaurant chain, which they can enjoy after the walk while picnicking on the banks of the eastern shore of Zeekoevlei.
Other interactive activities include a live bird display by the Eagle Encounters Raptor Rehabilitation Centre, a reptile show and display, a fire safety demonstration, and other exhibitions.
Entry is R5 a person (a maximum of R20 a family). All profits will go towards conservation activities at the site.
Registration will take place on the day at the picnic area on the eastern shore of Zeekoevlei, from 7.30am to 9.30am.
Participants in the fun walk will be able to walk anytime from 8am to 9.30am, and the festival starts at 9am at Zeekoevlei eastern shore picnic area. The venue will be signposted off Strandfontein Road.
