Driving licence backlogs to be cleared soon

Motorists who apply to renew their driving-licence cards before Thursday, March 31 will have their licences valid for a further three months on condition they are in possession of their old cards and proof of fees paid for the application to renew in the form of a receipt.

The bottleneck of outstanding driving license cards experienced between November 2021 and January 2022 will be cleared by April 2022 and the renewal backlog that was experienced due to the Covid-19 pandemic grace period will be cleared by September 2022, according to the national Department of Transport.

In a statement last week, the department said motorists who apply to renew their driving-licence cards before Thursday March 31 will have their licences valid for a further three months on condition they are in possession of their old cards. They must also have proof of fees paid for the application to renew in the form of a receipt.

Those who apply after the expiry date will have to apply for a temporary licence.

Motorists are therefore encouraged to apply to renew their licence cards before the expiry date to avoid additional costs.
