■ Eleven new recruits were added to Metro police’s dog unit last week. The new dogs include seven Dutch shepherds, two pointer German shepherds and two bloodhounds. They have been trained to sniff out drugs, guns, contraband and explosive devices. The new dogs replace eight others who retired to their handlers’ homes a few months ago. Metro police now have 22 four-legged canine officers in the unit. Mayco member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith, is seen with one of the dogs at Metro police’s headquarters in Parow.
