Cyclists beware

Cyclists in the northern suburbs are on high alert after three men armed with knives robbed a father and daughter of their cellphones and cash  while the pair were cycling near Joostenberg Vlakte while the pair were cycling on Waarburgh Road in Kraaifontein at about 8am on a Saturday January 26.
.
The father and daughter were unhurt and managed to keep their bicycles after farmworkers saw what was happening and came to their aid.
Police confirmed that the incident was reported.

Durbanville police spokesman, Captain Marchell Rhode, said the incident followed one in Adderley Road, Durbanville, in which three men in a white Ford Bantam bakkie ran a cyclist off the road and then stole his bicycle on Saturday January 12. In both cases, he said, the robbers were still at large.
Following the incident, Pedal Power Association’s Robert Vogel has appealed to cyclists all across Cape Town to stay vigilant and practice safety tips while on the road.

“Sadly, crime is a reality everywhere we go, and, unfortunately, cyclists are seen as easy targets by assailants due to the fact that we do not travel in cars so there is very little protection,” Mr Vogel said.
Another factor that puts cyclists in danger, according to Mr Vogel was that bicycle serial numbers weren’t registered on a central database that could help to trace stolen is the fact that bicycles are not registered in terms of serial numbers, despite the high prices attached to it.
