A 39-year-old court orderly stationed at the Bellville Magistrate’s Court was arrested on charges of corruption on Wednesday May 25.
The Western Cape Anti-Corruption Investigating Unit acted on a tip-off that the sergeant was transporting drugs to the court cells and he was placed under observation.
“He was seen leaving a bag next to the court building and left immediately without reporting for duty.
“The bag was searched and 50 mandrax tablets, three packets of tik, dagga, two cellphones and three batteries were discovered inside,” said Western Cape police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel André Traut.
He has been charged with corruption and was due to appear in court on the same day.
“We are eager to root out corruption among our ranks and will make every endeavour to bring perpetrators to book,” said Lieutenant Colonel Traut.
