The Western Cape government has expressed concern over the number of road accidents and fatalities reported over the past long weekend.
In Kraaifontein, police confirmed that two vehicles were involved in an accident where eight people were injured.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving was being investigated by Kraaifontein police after the crash happened at about 2.50am along the Botfontein Road.
“All seriously injured were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Investigation continues,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape mobility department said preliminary statistics revealed that 22 crashes, resulting in 24 fatalities and numerous injuries were recorded across the province from Friday December 13 until Monday December 16. Of these, 7 pedestrians tragically lost their lives.
“Most of these accidents are caused by human behaviour and could have been easily prevented… Let us all commit to practising safer road-use behaviour.
“Together, we can create a culture of accountability and care that prioritises and protects the sanctity of human life,” said Western Cape MEC for Mobility, Isaac Sileku.
