City fines water wasters

Law enforcement officers are pictured with buckets that have been confiscated.

City of Cape Town staff and the SAPS visited 78 car washes in Kuils River, Khayelitsha, Sea Point, Fish Hoek, Wynberg, Gordons Bay and Brackenfell last week Friday, January 26.

They issued 37 fines to people illegally using municipal water to wash cars. Four fines were issued to people using municipal water to mix cement and more than 150 hosepipes, buckets and car washing utensils were confiscated.

The City’s Mayoral committee member for safety and security; and social services, JP Smith encourages residents to report water wastage to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.

“The sooner the reports are logged, the quicker we are able to respond as effective enforcement requires catching guilty parties in the act,” said Mr Smith.
