Choirs take to stage at Taalmonument

The Brackenfell High School choir.

School and community choirs will perform during a choral festival at Paarl’s Afrikaans Taalmonument on Saturday April 14.

“There is no competition or judging linked to this event,” said organiser Christine Bam, of Kuils River, herself a mezzo soprano and vocal coach.

“It’s a fun event for choirs to sing, enjoy the day and network with other choirs.”

Fifteen choirs are taking part, and the choristers come from Frank Pietersen Music Centre, Brackenfell High School, DF Malan High School, Jan van Riebeeck High School, Junior Campus Private School, Paul Roos Gymnasium, Protea Heights Academy, Paarl Boys’ School, JG Meiring High School and the East District Community Choir.

Each choir will perform before closing with a mass choral piece, Amavolovolo, arranged by Rudolf de Beer.

Tickets are R120 for adults and R60 for children under 12. They are available at Computicket or at the amphitheatre. Gates open at 5pm and the festival starts at 6pm.

There will be food stalls and festival-goers are advised to dress warmly. No fires, dogs, own food or drinks will be allowed.
