With reference to your article (“Residents not in favour of tower,” Northern News, October 4).
That the City of Cape Town’s Municipal Planning Tribunal approves applications, despite petitions and objections from residents, demonstrates a blatant disregard for the “will of the people”.
When cell towers are being erected, the views of residents must be taken into account. The World Health Organisation requires that this be done.
Section 24 of our constitution is very clear that “everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health”.
The claim from town planners Warren Petterson that “current research had reached a point whereby scientists are satisfied that base stations do not pose a health threat” is false, irresponsible, unsubstantiated and self- serving.
Two hundred and twenty-two scientists, from 41 nations, disagree. We suggest that they study the International Electromagnetic Field Scientist Appeal.
Gail Greyvensteyn will live within 6m of this cell-tower and this is a human rights violation as this polluting radiation will pose a critical threat to her right to health and life.
