“Ons ry ’n BMW, ons ry ’n BMW, ons gaan elke jaar oorsee, ons ry ‘n BMW, ons sal jou nie ’n lift gee…”
Johannes Kerkorrel didn’t have much nice to say about BMW drivers, but there’s a clutch of them in Scottsdene who could well have changed his tune.
The neighbourhood’s non-profit BMW Society Club was started in June last year by drivers of the luxury German automobile who feel they want to do more then simply “drink suurlemoentee”, as Kerkorrel had it.
So they get together on an an empty piece of blacktop in Koopmans Avenue on Friday nights to burn rubber and pull wheel-spinning stunts to draw kids away from gangs and drugs.
The club holds projects called “runs” every second month when they donate food, blankets and toiletries to needy families as well as schools, orphanages and retirement homes.
In December, the club visited the Bright Stars Children’s Home in Kraaifontein, where they gave each child a Santa Shoe Box with clothing and toiletries.
Star IT, a business in Tyger Valley, donated food and a computer to the children’s home. The kids were entertained by Young Jeez, a local artist from Kraaifontein, and spent time playing on some jumping castles.
The club plans to do more projects this year, reaching out to the needy in Kraaifontein, Eerste River and Strand, and its CEO, Ronald Michaels, has appealed for donations of food, school clothes and shoes, clothes and toiletries.
