Security guards were shot at when they found four men in the Bellville library’s basement in the early hours of Wednesday October 11, according to mayoral committee member for community services and health councillor Patricia van der Ross.
Cables were stolen during the break-in leaving the library temporarily without power, she said.
Bellville police spokesman Captain Aubrey Morwenyane said an attempted murder case had been opened.
The break-in followed an earlier one on Wednesday September 6 in which two tablecloths had been reported stolen, he said.
Ms Van Der Ross said no injuries had been reported during the incidents.
The library has 24-hour security, but Ms Van der Ross has asked the public to work with the City to look after the facility, and she asked anyone who knew who the perpetrators were to come forward.
In February intruders damaged the library’s ventilation system (Northern News, ‘Bellville library crippled by vandalism’, February 2023).
