Accommodation to help people isolate

Take responsibility to manage the curve and get to the other side. Continue washing hands, wearing masks and using sanitiser.

The Western Cape government has made 9 683 beds available to help people quarantine or isolate and curb the spread of Covid-19, said Premier Alan Winde in a digital press conference today.

Mr Winde asked people to make use of the comfortable and safe alternative quarantine or isolation accommodation. Transport, meals, and a laundry service will be provided. “Unless you can prove you have the capabilities to self-quarantine yourself,” said Mr Winde.

Mr Winde’s spokesperson, Bianca Capazorio said the Western Cape Government is currently making use of a number of sites across the province. “These include various government owned sites and resorts, as well as privately-owned hotels, which we have contracted as quarantine and isolation facilities. Other sites, like the Old Mutual facility in Pinelands and Protea  Hotel Durbanville, have been donated for use by the private sector,” said Ms Capazorio.

She said the most number of beds are available in the metro region. “We have not publicised the locations of the majority of these sites in order to protect the privacy of the people placed in them,” she said.

In the digicon, Mr Winde also addressed the opening of alcohol sales under level 3 lockdown on Monday June 1.

An increase in alcohol-related injuries has put a strain on hospital trauma units.

Mr Winde asked people to be more responsible so the province can flatten the curve.

Residents need to continue washing hands, wearing masks and using sanitiser.

“A big challenge has been the rationing of testing capabilities. This is now being addressed with more help from national government and the backlog of testing is coming down drastically,” said Mr Winde.

In a media release, the Western Cape government asked those living in the northern/Tygerberg sub-district who have tested positive for coronavirus to isolate.

Tygerberg suburbs include Ruyterwacht, Elsies River, Ravensmead, Bishop Lavis, Delft, Bellville South, Bellville, Parow, Goodwood, Belhar, Matroosfontein and Uitsig.

Northern suburbs include Philadelphia, Klipheuwel, Fisantekraal, Richwood, Bothasig, Edgemead, Monte Vista, Plattekloof, Welgelegen, Panorama, Northgate, Door De Kraal, Eversdal, Durbanville, Stellenbosch University Satellite Campus, Welgemoed, Loevenstein, Hoheizen, Bellville Park, Oakdale, Kenridge, Joostenberg Vlakte, Bloekombos, Northpine, Kraaifontein, Cape Gate, Okavango, Morgenster and Brackenfell.
