Two people have been arrested and R5 million worth of abalone seized in Brackenfell. The arrests on Tuesday October 31 were the result of a joint operation by the Hawks, the Department of Agriculture, Forest and Fisheries (DAFF) and the police dog unit. Hawks spokesman Captain Lloyd Ramovha said a raid on the illegal abalone processing facility in River Road had turned up 40 000 units of abalone weighing more than 2 tons, comprising wet, dried and cooked units of abalone. The two suspects, aged 39 and 42, appeared in the Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on Thursday November 2. The case was postponed to Friday November 10 for a bail application.
