Police arrested a man in Brackenfell, yesterday, Tuesday May 30, for being in possession of abalone worth R5 million.
Brackenfell police spokeswoman Captain Erica Crous said dog unit officers patrolling in Old Paarl Road had noticed two men acting nervously.
The men were walking away from a Mercedes Benz Vito van parked in the parking bay outside a take-away. The officers kept an eye on the men and noticed another man getting into a nearby Land Rover and then driving off.
The officers pursued the Land Rover and pulled it over.
“A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 60 bags filled with abalone,” Captain Crous said.
“The suspect, a 53-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession and transportation of an excessive amount of dry abalone without a valid permit.”
