Music duo Emerger, formed by Bellville couple Emma de Goede and Gerry Matthee, have released a music video for their single, Urban Wilderness, on YouTube, depicting the beauty of Cape Town.
In the video, the duo are seen walking through areas such as Sea Point Promenade, the Company’s Garden, Platteklip Gorge trail on Table Mountain and areas surrounding UCT, where they both studied.
De Goede, the duo’s vocalist and pianist, say Matthee wrote Urban Wilderness as a homage to Cape Town. “In essence, it’s about wanting to see where life can take you while staying grounded in your roots.”
The self-directed video (https://youtu.be/lXhxi-b9WPU) was shot prior to lockdown, and De Goede says it has served as a reminder, since its release on April 21, of the beautiful places we can’t visit right now.
“In the music video for Urban Wilderness, we wanted to showcase the best sides of Cape Town and take audiences on a nostalgic journey through the forests and city scenes of the beloved hometown we grew up in.”
The couple met in high school and studied music together at UCT. They started Emerger in 2016, and in 2018, they released their debut album, Bloom.
“We’ve always been performing and making music together, but it was during our university time in which we formed Emerger,” De Goede says. “I graduated with a BMus in Jazz Voice and Gerry with a BMus in Classical Composition. I’d describe our signature sound as dreamy synth-driven melodies, cinematic progressions, powerful pop vocals and punchy beats.”
Since the release of the album, they’ve attracted both local and international attention.
“Two of our songs, Hindsight and Nomadic Love, have been played on BBC Radio and featured as part of the BBC Introducing Show (a show which highlights up and coming artists) in the UK. Our debut single Break & Fall was a winner of the Avid and Abbey Road Studios International Song Contest, chosen from 5000 entries across the globe while we also attended sessions at Abbey Road Studios in London. Soon after the release of Bloom, Apple Music showcased us on their new artist spotlight, featuring our songs on various streaming playlists.”
The duo hope to release more music later this year.
