CPO showcase at opera house

The CPO at the last community gala finale.

The next Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) showcase will take place on Sunday October 20 at the Artscape Opera House, at 5pm.

Held in collaboration with the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry, CPO Spectacular will include the music of the Beatles, Abba and Queen.

There will be performances by soprano Lynelle Kenned, saxophonist Don Vino, singer Jarrad Ricketts, Township Opera and members of the Zip Zap Circus.

New to the CPO platform are dancing pair Oleksii and Michele, singing group Asili, crooners Tracey-Lee Oliver and Madeegha Anders.

On the podium will be the CPO’s resident conductor, Brandon Phillips. Aviva Pelham is the musical director and the master of ceremonies will be comedian Alan Committie.

Louis Heyneman, CEO of the CPO, says this concert, the fourth in a series that seeks to showcase young and emerging talent with a symphony orchestra, will repeat a winning pattern that the CPO has established over the last few years.

“We have shown how young musicians from diverse musical backgrounds can create a stir in Cape Town’s musical fraternity. We have shown that we can shift cultural goalposts from strictly symphony to multi-functional and reach a more inclusive audience and embrace all genres from rock and pop to opera, ballet and musicals. If you thought classically trained musicians cannot rock, you were wrong,” he says.

Concert-goers can expect to hear symphonic versions of the most iconic songs from the past few decades, while Zip Zap jugglers and acrobats move to Rossini and Khatchaturian.

Township Opera will sing Circle of Life and Back of the Moon, while Lynell Kenned and Jarrad Ricketts will bring you Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe’s Barcelona.
